Our City/Our Stories

A group of artists Rachel Meyers, Megan Richards, Michael Chew and myself came together as iMap Collective, sharing an interest in mapping and documenting the spaces we live in through community engagement. We invited visitors to our exhibition Our City/Our Stories at the City Library, to write or draw their personal stories and experiences of being in the Melbourne CBD on pieces of trace paper, and then place the stories on the map exactly where they occurred in real life.

It was exciting and beautiful to see the map fill up with so many stories over the exhibition compared with the original blank canvas.

...and even to remember the process of working out how to hang a 16M map and keep it straight!

In the lead up to the show, we roamed the streets with a microphone and hosted several dinner and story telling nights as part of the exhibition. These tales were added to the space in a listening station, with some of the longer stories being transcribed and displayed on the wall.

We also offered fun art making workshops for anyone interested in exploring creative ways of engaging with sense of place. This was a very special project to work on and it was thanks to the wonderful contributions of Melbournians who helped us create it!
